At fourteen I couldn’t find the words (or words I liked) for the marvelous feeling of recognition that came with these characters who had my hair, my eyes, my skin, even the ancestors of the rhythm of my speech. Their forms of identification are so natural to white readers-(Of course Rabbit Angstrom is like me! Of course Madame Bovary is like me!)-that they believe themselves above personal identification, or at least believe that they are identifying only at the highest, existential levels (His soul is like my soul, He is human. I am human). White readers often believe they are colorblind. Until they read books featuring nonwhite characters. I once overheard a young white man at a book festival say to his friend, “Have you read the new Kureishi? Same old thing-loads of Indian people.” To which you want to reply, “Have you read the new Franzen? Same old thing-loads of white people.

To preview my upcoming shop update on etsy, I’m going to do a little giveaway!
The WINNER will be able to choose one of the following:
1) Doctor Who Mini-Skein Pack containing five 10g (40yd) skeins in You Sexy Thing, Sonic Screwdriver, Time Vortex I, Time Vortex II, and Bowties are Cool.
2) Sherlock Holmes Mini-Skein Pack containing five 10g (40yd) skeins in A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Final Problem, and 221b Baker Street.

All yarn is hand-dyed by myself on a sturdy 75% wool, 25% nylon sock-weight base. The yarn is superwash, but minimal bleeding is possible due to the hand-dyed nature of the yarn, so caution is urged when washing. All dyes are food-safe ;-)
