Okay, so, I agree that the policy in Canada preventing passengers from boarding planes if they’re judged not to match the gender/sex stated on their identification is profoundly upsetting, but the post that is currently circulating is somewhat exaggerated and self-contradictory.
It states almost immediately that,”Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada,” but this isn’t true.
If you are trans and do not pass as your identified gender, and have not yet changed your identification, you should still be able to board, and if you have changed your identification, you should be able to board.
If you are a US citizen, you do not need surgery to get the sex marker on your passport changed. The National Center for Transgender Equality has a document describing the current US policy and the procedure for getting the marker changed. You do need to have undergone some medical transition, but for most people these measures will only be a problem if you have undergone HRT anyway.
It’s unreservedly horrible that anyone could feel justified in so brazenly limiting the movement of a large and varied group of people for no good reason, but the fact remains that there are still trans people who can ride planes in Canada, and stating that there are not is spreading misinformation.
